ELIGIBILITY FOR 2011 UNIVERSITY GAMES
The University Recreation and Aquatic Centre (URAC) Board has decided that no UOW student who was part of the UOW team to the Australian University Games in Perth in 2010 will be eligible to represent UOW at the 2011 Eastern University Games in Canberra later this month.
The decision was made due to unacceptable alcohol-related behavioural issues associated with last year’s 180-strong team, which resulted in damage to team accommodation and other problems. The incidents were reasonably widespread, occurred every night and were not restricted to any particular sporting team. URAC incurred significant additional expenses paying for repairs and hiring additional security guards.
URAC and UOW did not want to be associated with a repeat of that kind of behaviour, and has been increasingly concerned at a culture of binge drinking that has increasingly become part of the University Games.
Therefore, as part of a review of protocols and procedures for UOW participation in future University Games it was decided that this year it would bar all students involved in last year’s UOW team in Perth from participation in this year’s team.
It is anticipated that around 60 students will represent UOW in Canberra.
