Stroke Development

Our Stroke Development Program is broken down into 2 ability based levels. These levels build on the skills taught in the learn to swim program by refining freestyle and backstroke, introducing breastroke, butterfly and diving.

Swordfish - Maximum 6 children per class

A relaxed arm recovery is introduced in freestyle, and body rotation is developed. Bilateral breathing is introduced in freestyle, with children required to breathe on every third stroke. Introductions to breaststroke and butterfly occur in this class, along with beginner dives. In order to progress from this level, children will need to demonstrate correct technique sustained over 16 metres.

  • Freestyle with bilateral breathing over 16 metres
  • Circle swimming
  • Backstroke over 16 metres
  • Breastroke kick
  • Tumble turns and diving
  • Underwater dolphin kick for 8 metres

Barracuda - Maximum 7 children per class

The endurance expectation of this level is increased for this level. Fins are provided, as the emphasis on butterfly and breaststroke is increased. Dives and tumble turns are also taught with the distance extended to 25 metres.

  • Freestyle with bilateral breathing over 16 metres
  • Backstroke over 16 metres
  • Breastroke
  • Butterfly with fins
